How do I connect the ENS products to the Network?

The ENS supports DHCP and announces itself so an IP Address is easily identified. Once an IP address is identified, simply place the address in your browser and begin using your ENS product.

How do I update or upgrade my ENS products?

The ENS supports Xmodem, TFTP, email and cut/paste to update configuration and flash upgrade software. That means you can update your units in rack and simply electronically flash the unit without removing or disconnecting anything.

Can the ENS products manage my UNIX servers?

Absolutely, the OutPost Sentinel ENS products can monitor and manage almost any UNIX server and are often used to monitor, reboot and troubleshoot UNIX and Linux clusters as well as AIX, Sun and HP/UX servers.

If I am using HP Open View or Netcool do I need an ENS?

Yes, The ENS-8, 16 and 32 compliment and complete most existing management suites such as NetCool or HP Open View. If you are using these fine tools you have made a very substantial investment into managing your networks. The OutPost Sentinel SRENA solutions like the ENS product families take these products a step further. That is they enable you to continue to monitor and manage your devices even when the network fails. These products without the ENS, rely on the network to fix the network. When the network is down they can not monitor or manage. The ENS products provide direct access even if the network fails.

How do I use ENS products?

Use your ENS product to manage any intelligent device (server, router, PBX…). The ENS manages in band or through the TCP/IP and through the console serial access or Out-Of-Band (RS232) accessible utilizing the easy to use ENS Port Commander Utilities.

What is Port Commander?

What is Life Signs Sentinel?

Life Signs Sentinel (LSS) is software that provides perpetual monitoring of ALL mission critical devices. It eliminates guesswork and investigation time by taking you directly to the troubled device. It offers both SNMP traps and customizable event triggers. It enables you to scan console messages and look for trigger keywords (for example, OK prompt on Solaris box). Trigger will immediate page and email you messages and give you access back to the ENS product issuing the page and to the troubled device.

How does the ENS monitor my network?

The ENS comes with Life Signs Sentinel, which monitors your devices by utilizing SNMP traps and Agents that will work with whatever third party network management you may be using. What is Power Sentinel?

Power Sentinel is OutPost Sentinel's line of fully integrated intelligent power management products. This OPS Command Center software enables you to rollup and display all your ENS products and thousands of attached devices together.

The ENS Port Commander and Life Signs Sentinel software enable you monitor and manage any intelligent device regardless of type, brand or location. You can monitor and manage ALL your devices remotely and securely in network or through the devices console or auxiliary port.

I have very mixed or hetergenious networks ( AIX, HP/UX, Cisco routers, Extreme switches, Hitachi PBXs) - How many ENS SRENA servers will I need?

You should need only one ENS product to manage ALL (types and brands) of your devices. However, if you wish to direct connect, or manage out of band, more than 32 devices you will need additional units to correspond to the number of devices and locations you have.

How can the ENS SRENA products improve my NT network?

The ENS products will manage ALL your servers across platforms (UNIX, Linux, Windows XP/NT/2000/98, Open VMS, AIX, HP/UX and more. They will monitor and manage your routers and servers and everything in between. They provide access to securely reboot and reconfigure your equipment and they provide you power management to remotely cycle power to specified devices. (You Windows user know how important being able to cycle power and reboot a system can be.) Finally, you may wish to investigate OPS Command Center software to take your Network and NT management capabilities further.

How do I know if my network is SRENA compliant?

To be SRENA compliant a console access server must provide both in network and out of network management and monitoring. It must utilize SNMP traps and agents and also provide custom event triggers. In addition, it needs to provide secure access and multiple levels of security. Telnet and Radius are not enough. It must provide (SSHv3 or greater) 128 bit encryption, IP Packet filtering and centralized database authentication. Finally you must be able to easily access and manage the console access server and the managed equipment remotely with integrated power management, and large nonconnect port buffers, keyword search and additional trouble shooting and management tools.

How do I communicate with the ENS product?

You may communicate to your ENS product through Ethernet, Telnet, TFTP, SSH,SSL, HTML, RSH, RADIUS, VPN, Email , Sys Log, SNMP and DHCP. The IO connections include: keyboard, video, mouse, serial consol port and OBM port (modem), independent of the 8, 16 or 32 ports used for monitoring, USB and one or two RJ45 10/100 Ethernet ports.

How do I Authenticate Users?

The ENS products independently allow for authentication for up to 250 simultaneous users. The ENS also supports RADIUS and ODBC authentication.

How do I capture error console messages?

Life Sign Sentinel (LSS) enables you to scan console messages and look for keywords (for example:an "OK" prompt on a Solaris box). If an event takes place the trigger will immediately page and email you a message and give you access back to the ENS issuing the page and to the device which has triggered the event. LSS will also monitor TCP ports and notify you of problems. For example, if you TCP port 80 locked up, LSS will immediately notify you.

How do I determine my cable pinout requirements?
